What Keeps Us from Asking?

WHAT KEEPS US FROM ASKING GOD FOR THE DESIRES OF OUR HEARTS AND THE NEEDS OF OTHERS?

So often we wait until we have exhausted all our own efforts before we ask God for help. We get exhausted. Why do we wait?

    Jesus taught:

Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

WHAT ARE YOU NEEDING TO ASK GOD FOR TODAY? WHAT KEEPS YOU FROM ASKING GOD FIRST?

I often ponder, “You have not because you ask not.”

    From James 4:

2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

Jesus said, “Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” in John 16:24. Similar statements are found in Matthew 7:7; 21:22; Mark 11:24; Luke 11:9; and John 15:7.

When I was cleaning out old paperwork, I noticed that intentions that I had set years ago have been fulfilled. Not necessarily in the way that I had expected.

Others are still on the horizon, but I have moved closer to their fulfillment.

Boldness in asking, I assume, comes from teaching that it is possible and worthy.

It comes from experiencing that the I Am is our Provider.

It comes from habit. And in the asking, adding the habit of aiming towards the goals as we love the Almighty, with our heart, soul, mind and strength.

Yes, that’s an insightful question! The Bible indeed encourages us to ask, seek, and knock (Matthew 7:7). However, what often holds us back could be a combination of factors like doubt, fear, lack of faith, or even feelings of unworthiness. Sometimes, we may hesitate because we’re unsure if what we’re asking aligns with God’s will or if we’re afraid of being disappointed.

Was Jesus being literal? If by “bread” and “fish” he meant showing unconditional love and understanding to our children, was he was pointing to those places of goodness in our soul which we sometimes cannot access, or we ignore, for whatever reason?
