How Do You Open a Soda Can?

    If you were thirsty,

Would you use a chain saw to open a soda can?

Would you not prefer to open the can the way it was designed to be opened?

Humans are looking for a better future–usually through a leader that we believe can deliver that better tomorrow.

We are looking for a King with an army to secure our safety and get what we need to live.

We are looking for a King with the power to control powerful people to get the justice we want.

The Jews wanted this type of King to come and liberate them from Roman occupation in the time of Jesus, the time that Jesus emerged as a leader.

    And yet

Jesus didn’t look like a King. Jesus didn’t act like a King. Jesus didn’t have the things that Kings were supposed to have.

Jesus came as a worker of wood, a teller of stories, a healer of infirmity, and a comforter and disturber of souls. He came to tell us the truth.

Jesus was so un-King that he couldn’t be convicted of being a King. Pontius Pilate declared him innocent due to lack of evidence.

    And yet

Jesus says that he is a King, just of a Kingdom that is different than the Kingdoms of this world.

Unlike the Kings of this world, Jesus came to tell us the truth.

“Don’t use the chain saw,” says Jesus. Instead, “Use the Spirit.”

Jesus showed us how humans are designed to be opened by the Spirit to relationship with God the Father.

We can’t bring the Kingdom. The chain saw will not do.

The truth is that God will bring the Kingdom. We cannot. Not even with a chain saw.

God knows how we are designed. He knows how to open us.

Still today, the Kingdom is near. Thy Kingdom come.

In what ways have you experienced the Kingdom? Seen the Kingdom come?
