Hi Jim,
Thank you for reminding us of one of the greatest invitations of our Lord Jesus Christ:
“On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, ‘Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, “Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.”’” — Gospel of John
The three questions you shared are very meaningful and searching questions.
1. How do you know when your soul is particularly thirsty?
For me, the signs of spiritual thirst often appear in two different seasons of life.
The first is during times of spiritual wilderness. In those moments I may feel weak, discouraged, helpless, or burdened. Sometimes I want to pray but struggle to pray. My heart may drift toward judgment, unforgiveness, pride, or self-reliance. Outwardly I may appear strong, but deep within I realize how desperately I need a Savior, a Helper, and a Healer. Those moments reveal a deep thirst of the soul.
The second kind of thirst comes during times of deep intimacy with the Lord. This thirst is different—it grows out of love. It reminds me of a young man deeply in love who feels that time passes too quickly when he is with the one he loves. Hours of conversation feel like minutes, and when the time comes to say goodbye, it is difficult to part.
There have been times in my life when I spent long hours in prayer, reading Scripture for several hours at a time, fasting for two weeks without food or water, and enjoying deep fellowship with other believers. During those seasons, my love for God’s Word, prayer, and fellowship grew stronger than ever.
One fascinating reality about feeding on God and His Word is that the more we feed, the more our hunger grows. The more we drink from Him, the more our thirst increases. It becomes a beautiful, ongoing thirst for Jesus.
This reminds me of the heart of Paul the Apostle in Epistle to the Philippians. Even after accomplishing so much, his desire was still “to know Christ” more deeply, forgetting what was behind and pressing forward toward Him. In a similar way, Moses prayed, “Show me your glory.” The deeper we know God, the more we long for Him.
2. What do you do when you are thirsty?
When I recognize this thirst, I often return intentionally to prayer and fasting, seeking God more deeply. These times help quiet my heart and refocus my attention on Him.
3. What helps you drink from the presence of Jesus?
Several practices help me draw near to the Lord:
Extended times of prayer and fasting
Corporate prayer and fellowship with other believers
Reading and meditating on Scripture for longer periods of time
These practices help my heart drink from the living presence of Christ.
Scripture also reminds us that there can be a spiritual famine in the land:
“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of bread or a thirst for water,
but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.” — Book of Amos
May the Lord bless us with a holy hunger and thirst for Him. Whether in seasons of abundance or in times of difficulty, our deepest need remains the same—we need Jesus.
In Christ,
Bereket
