BURNING DOWN: CRISIS AND OPPORTUNITY
I learned yesterday that my three children lost their home, though a rental, and all their belongings. They are going to need help in numerous ways to navigate this loss and trauma. My friend Matt stayed the night in my apartment. In the morning, we learned that his home had burned to the ground with a thousand others. Everyone in our area knows several people who have lost everything. Its a disaster bigger than we imagined.
I think this may also be an opportunity bigger than we can imagine. People are calling me and asking what they can do to help. New connections. New openness. Giving and receiving. Neighbors helping neighbors.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE?
I see an opportunity to strengthen my relationships with my children. I can be there for them now.

This disaster reminds us, through you and others I know who have lost everything inanimate they loved, how small we are in the vastness of Creation, and how the real importance and measure of our lives is the goodness we share with others. BridgesUS is a wonderful “device” for doing just that, but it can’t be the only way we reach out to those in need.
